Entry is open to all eligible NZ recording artists who meet the Eligibility Criteria as set out in the Terms & Conditions of Entry. Nominations open in mid May each year for around six weeks.
The entry process is completed online via a separate NZ Music Awards nominations and judging site. Artists are to be nominated via their record label, or if an artist is independent (unsigned), they can nominate themselves. A fee of $40+GST is payable per category entered.

Six categories are decided by a Voting Academy, thirteen categories are decided by specialist Voting Schools, three categories are awarded on sales data alone and two categories are decided by the Recorded Music NZ board. The Music Awards Committee determines the People’s Choice Award finalist and the winner of that is decided by public vote.
