Actor Temuera Morrison told NZPA that his show business uncle was “A big totara tree in the world of entertainment”.
Indeed, Sir Howard leaves behind an industry and an adoring public who will sorely miss him, but also a powerful legacy as a Maori entertainer and national figure.
With over 50 years in the spotlight, Sir Howard’s contribution to New Zealand music resulted in his becoming a household name, crossing over generations and a melting pot of cultures. Born in 1935, of mixed Te Arawa and Irish ancestry, Sir Howard first found fame with the much loved Howard Morrison Quartet and continued on to have a highly successful and dynamic solo career. He was awarded an OBE in 1976 and knighted in 1990.
Prime Minister John Key acknowledged Sir Howard’s star:
"Sir Howard was a New Zealand success story. From humble beginnings he became an international success, first with the Howard Morrison Quartet, and then in an illustrious solo career,"
"But more than that, Sir Howard was one of New Zealand's best loved entertainers, his appeal spanning every age group."
"I pay tribute to a real gentleman. My thoughts are with his whanau at this time. Sir Howard Morrison will be greatly missed."
