Q: How do you enter the VNZMAs?

Entry is open to all eligible NZ recording artists who meet the Eligibility Criteria as set out in the Terms & Conditions of Entry. Nominations open in mid April each year for around six weeks. The entry process is completed online via the NZ Music Awards Nominations site. Artists are to be nominated via their record label, or if an artist is independent (unsigned), they can nominate themselves. For RIANZ Members a fee of $56.25 per nominated artist is payable upon entry. For Non-RIANZ Members a fee of $112.50 per nominated artist is payable upon entry. Q: Who picks the winners?

Ten (10) categories are judged by “The Academy”.  
 Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Best Group, Best Male Solo Artist, Best Female Solo Artist, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Best Rock Album, Best Urban/Hip Hop Album, Best Aotearoa Roots Album & Best Music Video. The Academy consists of more than 150 representatives from various sectors of the music industry.

Seven (7) categories are judged by specialised “Voting Schools”.
Best Producer, Best Engineer, Best Album Cover, Best Classical Album, Best Gospel / Christian Album, Best Maori Album and Best Dance / Electronica Album.Each voting School consists of an optimum of ten (10)Representatives (but no less than five representatives) from that genre or sector of music.

Three (3) categories are determined by sales data supplied by
the Official New Zealand Music Charts Compiler.
 
Highest Selling NZ Album, Highest Selling NZ Single, Airplay Record of the Year. (Nominations are not accepted for this category)

Two (2) categories are judged by the RIANZ board and awarded at its discretion.
International Achievement Award (Nominations are accepted for this category)
Legacy Award (Nominations are not accepted for this category) 

People’s Choice Award.
An appointed Music Awards Committee determines 5 finalists based on overall performance during the eligibility period. Voting is then open to the public to determine the winner.
Vote in this years’ Vodafone People’s Choice Award at www.vmusic.co.nz

A scrutineer appointed by the New Zealand Music Awards Committee will tabulate the votes. The scrutineer will report directly to the New Zealand Music Awards Committee in absolute confidence.
